Substantive Law Changes Made

I’m running to represent Trinity graduates in the Seanad because I want to continue to be a strong, experienced and effective voice in the Oireachtas for what matters to Trinity graduates: social justice, equality and equitable access to education.

Why I’m Asking for Your Vote

As a member of the 26th Seanad, I’ve worked hard to make a meaningful contribution to law making through my work in the Seanad chamber, through the Oireachtas committee networks and through my advocacy work outside Leinster House. I’ve been an active and engaged legislator, introducing 3 of my own bills since 2020, one of which informed a substantive change in employment equality law in Ireland, co-sponsoring another 13, and tabling more than 2,800 legislative amendments.

I approach my work in the Oireachtas in a constructive and collegial manner, engaging with all parties and none to affect legislative and policy change. I am a founding member of the Civil Engagement Group, an alliance of progressive, independent Senators, where I work alongside my colleagues Senators Alice-Mary Higgins, Frances Black and Eileen Flynn to include the perspectives of civil society and amplify the voices of maginalised communities in Irish politics. Together, we’ve collaborated to have a real impact in areas like human rights, equality, social justice, climate and biodiversity, data privacy and protection, and the safeguarding of vulnerable groups.

I’m proud of my record of achievements in the Oireachtas, some of which I’ve set out below.

Progress in Education

  • Achieved critical amendment to Higher Education Authority Act retaining student union representation on governing authorities of higher education institutions

  • Strong advocate for improved access to further and higher education, the provision of supports to promote greater equality of outcome in education, and expanded pathways for people returning to education

  • Caused the cessation of the use of non-disclosure agreements in instances of abuse and harassment in higher education institutions, with the support of Minister for Further and Higher Education

  • Re-established a research link between Trinity's Department of Psychology and the Irish Prison Service through the development of a study into neurodiversity in custodial settings

  • Developed programmes on media and digital literacy, and misinformation and disinformation, and how they shape our engagement with the systems around us

Promoting Equality & Human Rights

  • Introduced landmark legislative provisions to end the misuse and abuse of non-disclosure agreements in cases of workplace abuse, harassment and discrimination, now enacted in Irish law

  • Led out on Committee scrutiny of international surrogacy, recommending legal change which grants children born via surrogacy a lifelong legal relationship with their parents

  • Drafted legislation to overhaul the system for the assessment and collection of child maintenance payments, making it more fair and less contentious for families

  • Authored report on the future of youth work for the Committee on Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth, which called for transformative investment in the sector

  • Achieved amendments strengthening legal regulation of harmful content in the Online Safety and Media Regulation Act

  • Co-sponsored legislation to provide for safe-access zones around locations where people receive reproductive healthcare services, now enacted in law

Supporting the Vulnerable & Disempowered

  • Passed legislation expanding access to spent convictions, supporting the meaningful rehabilitation of people with historic criminal charges, successfully through all stages in the Seanad

  • Elected vice-chair of the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Drugs Use, achieving more than 50 substantive amendments to the Committee’s interim report

  • Launched campaign calling for Section 3 of the Misuse of Drugs Acts to be repealed, to provide for the decriminalisation of drug possession for personal use

  • Motions calling for the reestablishment of the Combat Poverty Agency and the de-financialisation of housing passed in Seanad Éireann

  • Drafted strategy to promote public safety in communities most acutely affected by violence, which promotes an all-of-community and all-of-Government response

  • Developed artistic projects in a number of Irish prisons, including the podcast 'Conversations on the Margins', and the 'Theatre of the Oppressed'

Global & Climate Justice

  • Co-sponsored legislation to prevent the transit of weapons and munitions to Israel from and through Ireland, and to cause inspections of aircraft seeking Ministerial exemptions

  • Led call by a number of former Trinity Senators for the College to divest from its business and research relationships with Israeli companies during the war in Gaza

  • Advocated for an end to the wars in Ukraine and Gaza at the Parliamentary Assembly of the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe

  • Introduced legislation to mandate climate reporting by large emitters and to cause reductions in these emissions over time

  • Presented on harm reduction and health equity at UNITE Global Health Network conferences in Warsaw, Vienna, Prague and Lisbon

  • Co-sponsored motion passed by the Seanad which called for a TRIPS waiver during the Covid-19 pandemic, to facilitate expedient global access to immunisation

  • Introduced legislation protecting right of civil society organisations to engage in political advocacy; on lowering the voting age to 16 and enacting major Seanad reform
